What Makes a Great Social Video
Social video lives or dies in the first second and is built for sound-off. Here is what makes one stop the scroll, the mistakes that sink reach, and how the panel scores it.
What makes a great social video?
A great social video earns the first second and is built to work with the sound off. It carries one idea, fits the platform it lives on, and feels native rather than like a TV ad squeezed into a feed. Attention is the whole game, and you get it or lose it before the viewer decides anything.
The feed is ruthless. A great social video respects that the viewer was about to scroll past, and gives them a reason not to in the time it takes to flick a thumb.
The elements of a strong social video
A first-second hook
Open on the most interesting frame, not a slow build. The intro, the logo sting, the throat-clearing all cost you viewers you never get back.
Sound-off design
Most people watch muted. Captions, text, and visual storytelling have to carry the message on their own, with audio as a bonus rather than the spine.
One idea, one platform
One point per clip, framed for where it runs. A vertical cut for stories, a different pace for LinkedIn. Reformatting is not the same as designing for the platform.
What holds social videos back?
Treating social as a dumping ground for the long edit. Branding so heavy it reads as an ad and gets skipped. And no hook, because the team fell in love with a build-up the audience will never see.
How the Impact Awards panel judges this category
The Best Social Video category at the Shootsta Impact Video Awards 2026 is scored against five criteria: creativity, business or social impact, innovation, best practice, and collaboration. The entries that win are not always the most polished. They are the ones that can show what the video was for and what changed because of it.
If you produced a short-form clip, teaser, takeover, or event recap for social with Shootsta between January 2025 and July 2026, it is eligible. Entry is free and takes a few minutes. Nominations close on July 31, 2026.
Put your team forward for the 2026 Impact Video Awards.
Where to start
Cut your best long video down to fifteen seconds and see what survives. That is usually the real social video hiding inside it. See social media video production and how to master video on every social platform.
