How to Produce Promotional Videos That Get Results
What counts as a promotional video?
A promotional video is any video designed to promote a product, service, brand, or event. That covers a lot of ground - from a 6-second social media bumper ad to a 2-minute product launch film. What they all share is an outward-facing purpose: get someone to notice, remember, or act.
The most common types are brand awareness videos, product launch clips, campaign hero videos, social media ad creative, hype reels, and event promotion content. See our full list of promotional video production formats.
What makes a promotional video effective?
A clear single message
The biggest mistake in promotional video is trying to say too much. One video, one message. If your promo tries to explain the product, share customer results, list features, and end with a call to action, the viewer retains none of it. Pick the one thing you want them to remember and build the entire video around it.
A hook in the first 3 seconds
On social media, you have about 3 seconds before the viewer scrolls past. On YouTube pre-roll, you have 5 seconds before they skip. Your opening needs to either surprise, provoke a question, or show something visually unexpected. "Hi, I'm from [company] and today I want to talk about..." is not a hook.
The right length for the platform
LinkedIn: 30-60 seconds. Instagram Reels/TikTok: 15-30 seconds. YouTube pre-roll: 15 seconds (non-skip) or 30 seconds (skippable). Website hero: 60-90 seconds. Email: under 60 seconds. Longer is not better. Every second that doesn't earn its place should be cut.
How do you produce promotional videos without an agency?
Agencies charge $5,000-$20,000 per promotional video. That pricing model works for an annual brand film but falls apart when your marketing team needs 10 promo clips per month across campaigns, channels, and audience segments.
The alternative is to separate filming from editing. Your marketing team films the raw content - product shots, talking heads, event footage, customer clips. Professional editors apply your brand kit and deliver polished promo videos within 48 hours. A video production subscription gives you this at a fixed monthly cost.
One filming session can produce multiple promo assets: a 90-second hero video, three 15-second social cutdowns, a vertical version for Stories, and still frames for thumbnails. That's 5+ promotional assets from a single afternoon. Read about scaling production across teams for the full approach.
How do you measure promotional video performance?
Match the metric to the goal. Awareness campaigns: view-through rate and reach. Consideration campaigns: click-through rate and time on site. Conversion campaigns: leads, demos booked, and pipeline influenced.
The one metric that matters for every promotional video: did the viewer take the action you asked for? If your promo ends with "visit our website" and nobody visits, the video isn't working - regardless of how many views it got.
